Loose-Leaf Tea for Plastic Free July

As the world’s focus increasingly turns to the reduction of human impact on our environment, consumers are evaluating their own footprint and contemplating the ways they can make a difference, even if it’s just a small step in the right direction. Initiatives such as Plastic Free July have helped to highlight alternative choices, and have led many consumers to consider switching to loose-leaf teas. When they do, our loose-leaf black tea, grown in our pesticide-free plantation in Far North Queensland and packaged in a recycled cardboard box, may well be a great option to consider!

What is Plastic Free July?

This month, we’re joining with businesses, organisations and everyday folk around the world to celebrate Plastic Free July – an initiative we think is the perfect opportunity for us all to consider how we can contribute to the reduction of single-plastic use. Plastic Free July was conceived some ten years ago in Perth, Western Australia, by the Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) as a Waste Watchers Program – a series of workshops and events designed to educate and support the community in transitioning to a more sustainable, low-waste lifestyle. Fast-forward to 2021, and the not-for-profit Plastic Free Foundation is spearheading a global movement, with over 326 million participants in over 177 countries and counting.

What impact can we have?

So, how can we do our bit to reduce the impact that single-use plastic has on our landfill, oceans and fauna? Among the choices we can make are choosing alternatives to plastic packaging, opting for refillable rather than new containers (and of course, keeping reusable shopping bags to hand, in the car or near the front door), saying no to plastic straws and utensils, and using one of those chic personal keep cups whenever we’re ordering our daily cup of tea or coffee to enjoy on the way to work.

As for our tea-drinking habits, a simple – and delicious – way to embrace a more sustainable future is by seeking out Nerada’s Loose-Leaf Black Tea, which is available at most major supermarkets. Not only does it come in a single and convenient recycled-cardboard box, but the box is specially designed with a nifty pouring spout for easy measuring and serving. With no plastic in sight, it’s a great option that tastes great too!

We’ve heard the call for a broader range of Nerada loose-leaf teas, which is why we also have a range of other loose-leaf tea styles packaged in 125g and 250g tins to choose from, available online or from our Nerada Tea Room in the Atherton Tablelands. Depending on your taste, you can choose from a range of loose-leaf styles, from the classic Plantation Blend, Black Tea with Lemon Myrtle, Royal Devonshire with Smooth Vanilla, Earl Grey and Green Tea, to an exotically spiced Chai Tea.

Talking tea bags

While the convenience of tea bags remains a priority for many, we’re aware that every effort needs to be made to ensure the materials we’re using are as sustainable as possible. That’s why we are also trialling a new paper for our tea bags.  This has been rolled out for all of our tagless bags and we're in the final phases of testing to roll out for our tea bags. For now, rest assured that the natural fibres in our tea bags are compostable.

Are you taking part in Plastic Free July? Gather your friends or colleagues and try a new loose-leaf brew! Bring out your favourite teapot and enjoy one of Nerada’s beautiful loose-leaf teas. You may never look back!
